Workshops are usually held in the afternoons or evenings, all throughout the Wasatch Front. Each workshop will focus on one of ten areas:
Child Development: A Demonstration Workshop
This workshop looks at the domains of child development -- intellectual, social, emotional and physical -- and demonstrates how good television programs can be a powerful and purposeful introduction to exploration and learning. download booklist

Math
Are you afraid of teaching math? Does the idea cause you to sweat? This workshop will ease your fears and make you anxious to teach your child about math. Participants get hands on ideas of how to use math in everyday situations using shapes, numbers, and songs from PBS programs. download booklist

Media Literacy & the Learning Triangle
A Basic workshop that helps parents and childcare providers with awareness concerning media and how to use quality television, literacy and activities to support learning. download booklist

Music
Rhythm, movement, instruments, and songs make up this workshop. Participants will explore ways to use music as a teaching tool using PBS shows, books and activities. download booklist

Nursery Rhymes
Songs and rhymes for young children have been passed down for generations. They're fun, children love them, and they provide a warm nurturing experience between parent and child. We may not be aware of their enormous educational value. This workshop teaches participants how to use nursery rhymes to teach their children. download booklist

Playing to Learn
A fast paced workshop that recognizes a child's need to "play" as part of the learning process. Participants understand the role of media, hand-on activities and quality children's literature in directing a child' play to maximize learning opportunities. download booklist

Repetition & Variety
The more something is repeated, the more likely children are to remember it. Repetition in different forms also increases the chance of reaching children with different learning styles, and it gives viewers a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. Participants will see how PBS shows use this method and wonderful books and activities that give variety to a subject. download booklist
“Having ordinary routines and rituals, such as bedtime stories, Sunday dinners, birthday cakes, even chores, is linked to marital satisfaction, better children’s health and academic achievement, and more secure adolescents, according to an examination at Syracuse University of 50 years of data on family dynamics. Researchers there found that life’s little routines add up to a big security blanket, especially in times of stress. Boring is a blessing!” -Woman’s Day, February 2004
Shared Reading
What is the best way to read to a six month old? Is it possible to read to a child while he/she is not sitting still? This workshop provides the answer to these and many other questions about reading. The magic happens when the child, the parent, and the book are joined. download booklist

Storytelling
Story telling is a tradition that has been practiced for hundreds of thousands of years. Historically speaking, "Every human culture in the world has told stories" (Central Oregon College Education Web Site) from Proverbs, to folklore to fairy tales as a way to pass down meaning and history. These same historic tales help shape our children's minds. Story telling is a way to teach: problem solving, communication skills, muscle coordination, are just a few. In this class you will learn the benefits of storytelling and the tools to make anyone a good storyteller.

What To Do With the Mad You Feel
This workshop helps teachers and childcare providers learn how to strengthen young children's developing abilities to manage and control anger. One of the most important messages we can give our children is "It's okay to be angry, but it's not okay to hurt." The class emphasis that controlling anger is a developmental issue and not a moral issue. download booklist
